I can always counter the spread with a cocktail of Steady and Fixer, or take a perk I modded in that grants addiction immunity. You only have to hunt for the mods, two of which are in areas you have to go to complete the DLC.
If I'm using an energy weapons build, it comes back to the Holorifle because it uses ammo more efficiently than the Gauss rifles and you just get it at the beginning of Dead Money. I've used the K9000, FIDO, automatic rifle, and SMMG just to see what they all did. I've never used any of the lever-action guns, though. If I'm playing a gun-based build, then I might go with an anti-materiel rifle or any. You already get a free varmint rifle and some 5.56 mm ammo from Sunny Smiles at the beginning of the game anyway, and you can mod that with a scope or get its unique variant, the Ratslayer while en route to Novac. At the end of the day, it always comes back to some type of sniper rifle. There's lots of weapons I've never used in the game.
